Will not compromise on an inch of land in Arunachal: AAPSU

ITANAGAR, Nov 14: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) while welcoming the Local Boundary Commission led by retired Justice Tarun Chatterjee, which is currently studying the interstate boundary issue between Arunachal and Assam, today said it would ‘not compromise on an inch of land in Arunachal.’

‘The AAPSU is opposed to the notification issued in 1951, without the knowledge of the people of Arunachal Pradesh, on the basis of the one-sided Bordoloi Commission report,’ it said, and urged the commission to ‘genuinely consider the case of Arunachal Pradesh so that the people of both the states may coexist peacefully.’ The Commission while studying the issue should take into consideration the traditional rights of communities with due emphasis on the landholding pattern of the individual owners as per their ancestral belongings, irrespective of the states, it said. The union also sought a review of the Reserved Forest Notification for the boundary areas, saying the notification along the interstate boundary was ‘executed arbitrarily, without taking into consideration the ownership rights,’ and that the eviction drives initiated by the forest departments of both the states ‘have been the driving force behind the boundary conflicts.’

On the other hand, it said, the map presented by the Geological Survey of India in 1972 ‘misrepresented facts, which has created further confusion and misunderstanding among the dwellers on the boundaries.

‘Most of the geographical area of Arunachal Pradesh have been dissected and shown as part of Assam. As a result, the administrative reorganization within Assam involved taking some part of Arunachal Pradesh as Assam’s. This needs to be redrawn on the basis of the decision arrived at by the mandate of the Commission,’ it said.

The union also lamented the violation of the Supreme Court directive and the status quo agreement between the states by some officers of the Assam government, ‘particularly of the forest department,’ and said it has enough evidence to substantiate its claim.

Urging the Commission to visit all the vulnerable places along the interstate boundary in order to bring about a logical conclusion, the union assured its full cooperation to any step to reach an amicable and lasting solution to the contentious boundary dispute ‘that has at times polluted the age-old relations between the two states.’

Koloriang witnesses tussle over electoral roll revision

ITANAGAR, Nov 14: The hearing of electoral roll revision in 21-Koloriang Assembly Constituency witnessed fierce dissidence and opposition from the ruling INC party workers.

It has been alleged that the opposition parties, namely PPA and NCP have enrolled several thousands of Chakma-Hajongs and non-APSTs in the revised electoral rolls.

The hearing was initially fixed from  November 6 to 8 for all polling stations under Koloriang but it was extended for another 3 days for 34-Pani polling station.

The INC workers are insisting for review of newly created 34-Pani and 35-Pigging polling station due to sharp rise in claimants of the former polling station, where the existing electoral roll is 89 while the claimants in revision is 2029.

Vindicating the stand and demands of the INC party workers, local MLA cum Parliamentary Secretary  (Tax & Excise) Lokam Tassar said that this type of illegal practice by the PPA and NCP just to gain political grasp is highly condemnable.

A massive peaceful dharna was also organized yesterday outside the Kurung Kumey DC’s office at Koloriang by the members of 21-Koloriang Assembly Constituency Native People’s Forum (KACNPF) demanding immediate removal of the Chakma-Hajong and non-APST claimants from the electoral rolls.

Bengia Tagar, Chairman (KACNPF) pointed out that they are not against enrolment of non-APSTs working inside Koloriang but against the bringing of outsiders in large number for inclusion in electoral roll, which, if not stopped now will severely affect the local indigenous populace. He also questioned the sudden increase in voter list of 34-Pani polling station from 89 to 2029 in current revision.

Meanwhile, the NCP and PPA in a joint statement cautioned not to make such statements without any concrete proof.

Bengia Tado, a senior NCP leader stated that, he being one of the pioneers in leading the Chakma-Hajong refugee issue since the beginning, he can never tolerate such activity, especially in his constituency.

Infuriated and embarrassed by the cheap politics the INC are indulging in, he pin pointed on the lackadaisical attitude and desperate bid of the local MLA under who’s ruling; development is a distant dream for the citizens of Koloriang.

Tado also said that if a single Cakma-Hajong is found to be enrolled by them they will willingly accept the mistake.

Nangram Niani, ZPM, Lower Koloriang and NCP leader also expressed her resentment over the allegations by INC Party.

She said that inclusion of refugees in electoral roll in Koloriang is ridiculous and the non-APSTs who have applied for inclusion in electoral roll are the working class, who don’t have adult franchise right at their native place and they have applied at their own consent as most of them have been dwelling in Koloriang since many years.

She appealed to all the media fraternity of the state to visit Koloriang and take public opinion so as to disseminate the actual information to the citizens.

Remembering Chacha Nehru and more….

S. Mundayoor

We have just celebrated yet another Children’s Day. What does it mean to us and the children after whom it is named?  The usual programme in most places in Arunachal and elsewhere, is a morning procession of small children shouting ‘Chacha Nehru ji ki jai..’, a few mundane speeches on Nehru as our first Prime Minister, and distribution of some  toffee (the wrappers of which can be seen, for days together, scattered around the area.)  To what extent do these efforts touch the lives of the children? Do they make any sense to their parents, or are they ‘involved’ in the celebration/observation of the day? Ever pondered a bit ?

It is just elementary, we feel, that parents and elders are responsible for caring and guiding the children, to lead them to a bright future. What does it boil down to? Sending them to a ‘good’ private school, or to tuition 2 hours daily all through the year, from nursery class onwards? Letting them ride a bike the moment they reach class 8 ? Pride ourselves in their splashing a 3” broad mobile, with wires hanging down their ears all day? For our teenaged daughters, admiring their courage in walking down the roads in the most stunning dress? We thank our stars that our children, like us, do not have to walk days to reach school, live in poorly-lit hostels, and to cook food themselves with fire-wood carried on shoulders from nearby jungles.

Well said.. What about the emotional, intellectual support to our children? The well-to-do parents provide them laptops, free access to internet, buy expensive books and magazines or send them for far-away vacation outings. What about the less-privileged commoner?  What could such a parent do?

Here is where Nehru ji comes up as a guide. Fully aware of how his only daughter was missing his company and guidance during his long absence in jail, he started writing detailed letters to the adolescent Indira, narrating many historical accounts and ideas that could guide her emotionally, educate her intellectually and strengthen her values. These letters, which became later classics as “Letters from a father to a daughter” (CBT, New Delhi) and “Glimpses of World History”, elevate Nehru not only as a scholar par excellence, but as a committed parent.

He goes one step further for all of us. Here was probably the busiest Indian, working 18-20 hrs daily as the leader of the nation, overweighed by its problems, and yet could find time to read a new book every night before he retired to bed. (Verrier Elwin admiringly refers to this in ‘A Philosophy for NEFA’.) This routine Nehru strictly followed till his very last night. How many of our parents can claim to reading one book a month?

Interestingly, the November 14 also marks the beginning of the National Book Week, a programme initiated by the NBT, during which many organizations, like the Lohit Youth Libraries Network, hold book exhibitions, reading sessions and book-contests.

What then could be a very befitting act to celebrate the Children’s Day and remember Chacha Nehru? Could we start the habit of reading a few pages of a book daily, setting a model for our children? Can we also read out a book, and share something we found stimulating, with our family members? Not just with little children. Our senior students at higher secondary schools and colleges, who spend so little time with their parents, too need our reading experiences. And feel enriched by the great treasures created by immortal minds.

Your new habit could wean our youth away from the strongest negative influences sweeping around them! Remember, in a few years, it would be they who have to read out to their young..

Correct syllabus at the earliest

Dear Editor,

We on behalf of all B.Com & B.Sc students of the state extend hearty thanks to “Mr. Amar Sangno” for raising our voice through his article “Bulky Syllabus Creates Panic among College Students” published in your esteemed daily dated the 12th November, 2013.

It pains our heart that we are the first batch of this newly introduced semester system for the students of B.Sc and B.Com first year, yet our career is not considered while prescribing syllabus of ‘English Compulsory Paper’. In almost all universities the contents of syllabus of semester system are just 50% of that of annual mode. As in annual mode a student has one year whereas in semester system a student gets hardly six months for preparation of examination. We appreciate that this has been done by RGU as well in context of all the other subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics and Commerce. In these subjects, the syllabus has not changed; it has been rightly cut short to 50% only. But to our great surprise and shock, the syllabus of compulsory English has not only been made lengthier, bulkier and more difficult than the previous syllabus of annual mode rather the contents of Unit ‘A’ & ‘D’ are quite irrelevant for our career as four prose pieces and a bulky drama ‘As You Like It’ by William Shakespeare, have been prescribed in these two units besides retaining almost all the contents of previous annual mode syllabus. In Unit ‘E’ also there is no specific topics mentioned.

What creates panic among B.Sc &B.Com 1st year students of the state is the fact that the new syllabus of Compulsory English Paper under Semester system retains almost all the contents of the previous syllabus of Annual mode- But the contents of five units have been loaded into two units i.e. units-B &C while additional, new and unwanted contents have been put into three units i.e. units-C,D&E, which has made the Semester-syllabus of compulsory English two times bulkier than even the previous syllabus of Annual mode and doubled the burden and stress on students.

We are anguished that it was the duty of the University to prescribe a good and relevant syllabus caring for our career. In fact there was no need for changing the syllabus as the previous syllabus of annual mode was very good and simply that could have been retained as happened in case of other subjects. Those who don’t know how to design syllabus should not pretend to be over smart to play with our career. Our teachers submitted representation duly forwarded by the Principal opposing the new bulky and bad syllabus for immediate correction in August itself. We waited for more than three months that University would correct, modify and restructure the syllabus in the interest of career of students. But till date nothing has been done by the University. We don’t want to waste our time in studying works of literature which does not have any relevance in our career building. Instead, we want to study such items which can help us in developing our English language as well as helping us in various competitive examinations. For this, it is essential that in Unit ‘A’, ‘D’ and ‘E’ also topics like essay writing, letter writing, paragraph writing, précis writing are prescribed to replace Drama and Prose pieces through bifurcation of Unit-C, which has been loaded with contents of three units of previous syllabus.

As our term-end examination is scheduled in December, University Authorities are requested to correct, modify and restructure our Compulsory English syllabus within a week as syllabus is the most important document and foundation for career of a student. University must ensure that if syllabus is changed it should be for better and not for the worse and the simple philosophy that syllabus of semester should be shorter in size must not be violated in ‘English Compulsory Paper’ and this should be taught to those who design the syllabus.

We cannot suffer innocently and silently only because of the mistakes of some people who were chosen by the university to make the syllabus of Compulsory English Paper. If University waits for another one year to correct that mistake of so called BUGS, our career will simply be ruined as we have examination in December only and hardly 20% of the syllabus has been taught to us, simply because it is too lengthy and bulky. It must be corrected immediately to give justice to the students of B.Sc. and B.Com first year of the state.

When syllabus of all other subjects has rightly been reduced by 50% than that of annual mode, ironically the syllabus of English has been made lengthier, bulkier and tougher than the syllabus of even annual mode. There is panic situation among innocent students and their career is at stake as they fear to fail in English because of too bulky syllabus.

Can University and those who were assigned the task of designing the Syllabus, answer our Questions?

·  When in all the other subjects Semester Syllabus has been reduced to 50 % of that of Annual Mode syllabus without any other change- Why has this not been followed in English Too, Whereas the previous Syllabus of  English under Annual Mode was very good and useful?

Can a Semester -Syllabus be Bulkier than That of Annual Mode and if so why was it not applied to other subjects also?

Looking forward for justice as nobody can justify that a semester syllabus can be doubly bulkier than even the annual mode syllabus.

Yours,

Nana Chera, Omi Dohu, Nyumpi Bagra, Amit Gupta, Nada R. Onya, Gitanjali Rai on behalf of all B.Sc and B.Com I year Students of  Arunachal Pradesh.

There should be respect for all the streams

Dear Editor,

There is something very wrong with the education system of our country.

Educational system works like a factory. In the process, the child is being viewed as just a product of the system. The emphasis that should be laid on the personal growth and development of the child has been overlooked. Capacity for convergent and divergent thinking, effective interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively, has been undervalued. To date, the Indian educational system is obsessed with producing individuals who conform. Independent thinking is discouraged as against conformity and passivity. It is unfortunate that today education instead of reforming the human behavior, in my humble opinion, appear to have failed to achieve its objective. Instead we find troubled atmosphere in the society at large, which calls for immediate reformation with the efforts of one and all. In comparison to earlier times, the literacy level has increased but it did not result in better human value which calls for transformation in the education system.

Unlike countries like America, where a child undergoes a psychology test in the beginning to check his bent of mind and is asked to follow the field which he likes the most, there is no such test in India. We run towards any field which we feel will give us a job. Today, there is an IT boom in India, it’s offering a number of jobs, and so everybody is seen pursuing computer science engineering or a small certificate course (say .NET or JAVA or other Computer courses). Can the govt. of India justify this situation? Today, when one is asked “Why an MBA?” (in personal interviews for admissions), he comes up with different answers given by coaching institutes just to hide the main reason. Trust me, more than 90% of students don’t have any other reason but MONEY, immaterial of their interests they jump into this course and end up becoming “just a manager” who ends up saying “my life sucks!” If Sachin Tendulkar would have been asked to become an Engineer or if Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam would have been asked to become a dancer, can you think of their performance? The point that I am trying to make out here is that every child should be given the liberty to choose a career of his/her choice. Perhaps then his efficiency would increase by more than 100% accounting to a better quality service to nation.

And also there should be respect for all the streams. It always does not have to be:

M.A English-Teacher

B.Com-Accountant

Hotel Management-Cook and

A Degree in Music-Sitting at home!

Is this how it is supposed to be? Students at the school level need to be educated regarding the kind of streams that exist and what importance each of them plays to make an economy diverse. I would say even the adults who make such comments should be counseled about the importance of each and every degree and its scope all over the globe. Students should be encouraged to take up the streams according to their interests and come out with flying colours in that line; and the crowd around should not let them down but treat them equally. Trust me, every career has numerous opportunities, you can excel if you are good at it!

Yours,

KD Pertin

People of state bearing brunt of Congress party’s misgovernance

Dear Editor,

The proposed “Vikash Rally” by the Congress Government itself is making mockery of their more than three decades misgovernance in Arunachal Pradesh. At present whatever problems faced by the common people of the State is because of the Congress party’s misgovernance. Traditionally, the people of Arunachal Pradesh were of high moral values, ethos and just, however, because of the money culture of the Congress some of the indigenous people of the state has been made corrupted. Therefore, the prevalent rampant corruption practiced in the state is transplanted by the high commands of the National Political parties.  Arunachal Pradesh is still most backward in the country not because of lack of resources but because of the deliberate policy of the Central Government after 1962 Indo-Chinese war.

People of Arunachal Pradesh in general and capital city in particular had to pass their darkest phase during the leadership changed in Congress party in year 2011. Therefore, the PPA demands that the Congress Government should directly own responsibility for backwardness and lawlessness of Arunachal Pradesh. So, instead of “Vikash Rally” the Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi and Congress leaders of Arunachal Pradesh should tender apology to the people of Arunachal Pradesh

Yours,

Dr.  Ashan Riddi

Secretary General

PPA

Young talent should be properly groomed

A deafening roar greeted Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday at his home ground as India's favourite son walked out to bat in his farewell Test to a guard of honour from his opponents.  Tendulkar's 200th Test match, against West Indies, at the Wankhede Stadium will also be his last, as the 'Little Master' brings the curtain down on a glittering 24-year career at the age of 40. The match started in festive fashion with the Indian government releasing two commemorative stamps, while local organisers used a specially minted coin to mark the occasion as Tendulkar led the team on to the ground.

Sachin Tendulkar has inspired millions of children to take up cricket as career. Also he has been the uniting factor in a culturally sensitive country like ours. Sachin is true example of how the sportsperson can become role model for youngsters. In North East sportspersons like Olympic medallist MC Marykom and football legend Bhaichung Bhutia are idolized by many youngsters. For the troubled region, these sporting heroes are true inspiration. In our state due to lack of proper infrastructure sports has never grown.  Infact many budding sportsperson get disenchantment due to lack of support system. There is urgent need to properly groom the young talent, so that they bring laurel for state as well as country.
